How to Create Change #11: Five Levels to Transformation

Author: Don Scott December 16, 2025

How do you become an outstanding leader?

  • Get real about where you are.
  • Get excited about what it would mean to be the leader you could be.
  • Decide. Commit.

That gets you started. And you won’t get far without those three happening. Next, this is like any other transformation.

It begins with information. You can find more books on leadership than would fit in a tractor trailer. These messages I’m sending are about what it takes to change. That’s all just information.

Next is getting what you need to get from the information. It’s one thing to read something. It’s another to let the light come on and really understand what you need to understand. Understand about the information, about yourself, and how the two fit together.

Practice is where it falls down. Have you ever read a book and thought: “Wow. Really good stuff!” Maybe you even made notes or lists and started doing some thing. For a time, and then stopped. Or you just read it and thought “Wow/ great stuff!” and then put it down and didn’t get around to doing anything differently.

In working with clients, I’ll check in after a few months, and they may tell me: “Yes, I’m doing the reading. Really learning a lot in the sessions.” So, they’re taking in useful information and understanding. And we figure out they aren’t doing the most important part of “the work.” They aren’t practicing.

What would this mean in terms of going from being a “pretty good” leader. Or perhaps not all that a good” leader. To excellence. To being the kind of leader Dwight D. Eisenhower was talking about when he said:

    Leadership is getting someone to do something you want to have done, because they want to do it.

Whoops, out of time! I’ll pick back up with practice, as the path to excellence in the next one

Do this::
  1. Consider the diagram and all I’ve written. If you’re serious about your own growth. If you’re not too busy. If you want to create the higher level of you. If you’re intentional about always moving that direction.
  2. Then, figure out where you are on those first three bullets.
